Where Do Rhododendrons Grow Best? Rhododendrons Flowering
One of the most interesting things to visit in North Italy is the parks. You can find spectacular flowerings of different species there. This photo was taken a year ago in the park Burcina in Biella.
Biella is a little town and it’s very probably you’ve never heard about it till today. But it’s a town known in all of Italy for its rhododendron collections. Yes, there are two dells with many rhododendron plants in the region. The first one, Burcina, in the photo, has more than 120 species. They begin to flower in May, from the 10th to the end of the month probably.
We have been very unfortunate this year as we lost the flowering in this park due to the persistent heavy rains. As well as the flowering of the narcissus in the mountains.
The other park is situated not far from the town, too, but it’s higher above sea level and the rhododendrons normally flower one-two weeks later than in Burcina. This park is in Trivero. It is modern and has some pieces of modern art inside.
But the most spectacular is the road (sp 232) that is adorned with these plants. They come down like waterfalls. The road is dangerous but I leave my car and walk along the road to enjoy them.
There are many “original” rhododendrons everywhere in the mountains. They are very little and the flowers are little, too. The flowering depends on the above-sea-level height of the place and you can find these plants even in June and July.
Unfortunately, rhododendrons do not have any fragrances.
Ah, watching the flowering in parks can be such a delightful experience! It's like nature's own colourful and fragrant show. The sight of colourful petals swaying in the breeze uplifts your mood and brings a sense of peace and tranquillity.
Observing the flowering in parks also allows you to witness the cycle of life and renewal. I think about it every time I visit them. You can witness the transformation from buds to fully bloomed flowers, appreciating the beauty and intricacy of nature's design. It's a reminder of the resilience and beauty that exists all around us.
The experience of watching the flowering in parks is something to cherish. I will tell you about other flowers in Italy, too, but next time you have a chance, go out, find a beautiful park, and let yourself be captivated by the wonders of nature's floral masterpiece. And tell me about your experience commenting on my posts - I’m really very curious to know more about the local flowers you have.
So, where do rhododendrons grow best?
As the experience of the Biella gardens shows us, rhododendrons grow well in places protected from bad weather, but in climates that are not too hot. At the same time, the plants are exposed to the sun. The soil is composed of moraines of ancient glaciers, sands of disappeared seas, porphyries, clays, limestones, pebbles and much more. Hydrangeas which are light blue/blue grow well in the same place.
