A Woman Photographer At Night In Venice (2)
The night in Piazza San Marco in Venice begins. Did it make sense to have this experience?
It was already late afternoon and given the season, I had a maximum of an hour before it became night. I have never visited Venice in the low seasons and could not even imagine what awaits me. But since I wanted to spend the night walking around the city and taking photos, I had a warm and large scarf with me. Nothing more
I don't remember if I told you that it takes an hour to walk from the station to Piazza San Marco. So, having arrived at 4 pm and with all the crowds on the streets, I was in the square no earlier than 5:30 pm. The flight was scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
Unfortunately, the promised flight of the Lion (I don't remember who it was supposed to be exactly) was not there. There wasn't even any kind of equipment to organize it. Sad. But what can you do?
Piazza San Marco is a big medieval town internal square with a relatively large pass to the lagoon. There are many tourist attractions to see and some museums (that were still open at that time). I didn't intend to visit the museums, but I asked about the prices. After that, I would have lost the desire to visit them anyway.

Venice: The Remarkable History of the Lagoon City
I am used to thinking like someone who takes people to visit the city: if there are 4–5 museums nearby and entry to each of these museums costs 20 euros, how much should a family of 4 pay to visit them? And they also have to stay overnight, eat, take public transport… In short, and this is not just my opinion: the desire to grab everything possible has become a disease in Italy in the last decade. When you visit these most popular sites in Italy and see the terrible state of degradation in which they are usually found, the only thought that comes to mind is: what happens to all that money???
Let's leave the tickets alone. That was the parenthesis. Let's go back to the square.

The square and the promenade were full of people with beautiful costumes who were happy to be photographed. I don't remember why, but it was clear that these were tourists themselves who rented costumes and then performed as carnival characters until the time when they had booked dinner at the restaurant.
I felt cheated, honestly. I had hoped to see the Carnival and not tourists dressed up as characters… I was very disappointed.

On the run, I tried to take my photos before heading to the station, as the carabiniere suggested. I decided that on the way back I would then eat something in one of those “passing” places.
The square was getting emptier, everyone was leaving. After 11:30 pm, I headed towards the station too. A few young people were hurrying home after work, perhaps. Everything was closing.

At one point I heard music and went to see what was there. It was a very small square with a band on the platform playing something perhaps cheerful, but too loud.
The square was simply packed with young people, so to speak, there was no room to swing a cat. I tried to squeeze forward to see what kind of performance it was because there was almost nothing visible from the side where I was. At that moment, a fight broke out where I had just passed. I realized that I didn't belong there: I would get into trouble for no reason at all.

I crawled along the wall, past the fighters who were sorting things out among themselves, and ran out onto the main street, where there was no one at all anymore.
It was a little scary to be alone after that fight, but there was already silence around. I remembered that I wanted to have a snack — I didn't take anything with me, because in the city you can always find an open place.
But I was wrong: after 12 everything was closed. I walked to the train station. Everything was already closed there too. Oh well, no one died if they didn't eat for half a day.

With great difficulty, I found a free seat among the few seats that in Italy for some reason are considered sufficient at train stations. What can I do? I'll have to sit here until the morning… And I prepared myself for a long night.
If only I could imagine HOW long this night would be!
I had just settled in and relaxed after a few hours of running around Venice when I heard the announcement that the station was closing for the night.
The station was closed for the night!
