Where Will Your Vacations to Go Take You?
Your task: Try analyzing your life to understand where your today's vacation preferences come from. Or how I uncovered the origins of my vacation preferences.
Do you have a dream vacation?
When I think of the word "vacation," my mind instantly drifts to sun-soaked days by the ocean. There's something magical about being near "big water" that captures my imagination and fills my heart with joy.
As a child, my father whisked my sister and me away to the enchanting shores of Crimea every summer. We lived in a cozy tent on the beach for an entire month, a cherished tradition of that time. Picture entire towns of colorful tents sprawling across popular vacation spots, where city dwellers would set up camp by rivers, lakes, or the sea for spontaneous getaways after work.
On weekdays, our tents stood empty, filled with cozy mattresses and essentials, untouched by the hands of mischief. Each evening, the tent towns came alive as neighbors gathered around crackling campfires, sharing meals, laughter, and stories under the starlit sky. Those evenings they fostered a sense of community that made every moment unforgettable.
Fast forward to our life in Lithuania, where our family discovered the charm of the Baltic Sea. Factories, including the one where my mother worked as a nurse, offered small seaside houses for their employees and their families. Each factory worker could enjoy a week-long retreat in these simple but cozy accommodations, where communal kitchens allowed us to whip up delicious meals together.

Now, living in Italy, my friends on the Amalfi Coast have their own unique take on summer adventures. They often organize beach hikes, armed with sleeping bags to catch sunrises or dance the night away at beach parties. I can’t help but feel a twinge of envy, as my responsibilities at home with my pets limit my vacations to just a day or two.
A few years ago, I finally had a taste of my dream vacation at a stunning beach near Savona. I arrived in town at 2 PM, and the rest of the afternoon was spent swimming in the inviting waves. That evening, I savored a delicious pizza at a nearby restaurant, and the next morning brought the highlight of my trip—a long, leisurely swim in the sea.
Reflecting on those moments, I realize that my ultimate dream holiday would be living in a charming little house by the sea, where I could open my door each morning and dive straight into the refreshing water. Just a week of such bliss would be my perfect escape—perhaps with a sprinkle of royal flair, like wearing the queen's diamonds just once!
Since that dream remains just out of reach for now, I’ll settle for a swim at Lake Sirio this Wednesday. Nestled just a few kilometers from Ivrea, it’s my favorite lake among many in the area. While Viverone Lake is larger, Lake Sirio holds a special place in my heart. It may not be my dream vacation, but it’s the best escape I can manage at the moment.
So, I ask you—what about you? Have you discovered what YOUR dream vacation looks like, and what experiences have shaped that vision?
