Discovering the Most Awe-Inspiring Waterfall in Valle D'Aosta, Italy
Italy is home to countless breathtaking waterfalls; discover one of its best-kept secrets in the Valle d'Aosta, perfect for nature and adventure lovers.
I visited many waterfalls in Italy this year because they show their best after different months of incessant rains. Nature is so beautiful and scary! And we, humans, are like little ants or maybe even smaller… In the mountains, you suddenly understand your place in this universe. And then — you know that we must maintain it.
Yes, there is also the idea that we must preserve nature as the good Lord created it for our children and grandchildren. But in any case, we have no right to destroy the Creation.
These thoughts went through my head when I discovered the Rutor waterfalls — by pure chance. Somebody posted a photo of the tourist village La Thuile and I remembered I wanted to see Little St. Bernard pass. I opened the map and found that road, and the “Rutor waterfalls” sign.
Sometimes people ask: are there any waterfalls in Italy? Oh yes, there are hundreds and thousands of them everywhere here. If you create a challenge: visit a waterfall every day, you will go around all your life, I think.
This one in particular is three hours of drive from my town. But I wanted to visit it to enlarge my collection of waterfalls, so went there the next morning.
You can read my article about this part of Valle D’Aosta in the article Thermal Baths at the Foot of Mont Blanc and admire the nature photographs I posted there.
Well, while I was studying the trail map, I noticed that it is possible to do a ring route. Why am I telling this? There were several couples of people doing the same trail to the third waterfall (there are three together) who then saw me coming down and were very surprised that it was possible to do so. They did not see the map before they went.
I never go out unless I have studied and memorized the map and the route to take. I have two or three GPS apps on my phone (very often phone lines don't work in the mountains). And I also carry a paper map if I have it.
Maybe it is because I walk alone and know that hardly somebody will help me, since I always find trouble during my walks. But in any case, it's very easy to lose the path and find yourself in serious difficulty.
This time, turning back from this one of the best waterfalls in Italy, I lost the path twice (unfortunately, I can't see well) and it was a bad time also because I had to turn back to my car by 2 pm.
In case things like this happen (luckily I had the GPS map that showed me where to go) you have to go back and find the path where you were before and look for the special signs.
The Alps have little soil covering the stones, and trees have no room for roots. So these nice entanglements are formed where the paths pass.
The morning sun creates numerous rainbows above the falls.
The Rutor waterfalls are the result of the melting of the Rutor glacier, located on the surrounding mountains at 3486 meters above sea level. This is the largest glacier in the Aosta Valley.
This stunning waterfall tumbles down rocky cliffs, shimmering in the sunlight and creating a breathtaking sight. Surrounding it are lush landscapes, unique flora and fauna, and exhilarating hiking trails.
My itinerary was 9 kilometers long. The third most beautiful waterfall is located at 2030 meters above sea level and the difference in altitude from the parking lot (1600) is 400 meters.
The Rutor Waterfall is more than just a stunning natural feature; it embodies the unparalleled beauty of the Italian Alps and offers you a unique encounter with nature.
For nature lovers, hikers, and those seeking adventure, this location is a paradise that also stands as a significant attractor for ecotourism. Understanding and appreciating places like the Rutor Waterfall can enhance our connection with the environment.
It seems to me that visiting places like this encourages the conservation efforts of everybody because you can’t stand in front of this power and beauty and not kneel before Creation.
